An Energy Assessment
Our projects generally start with a comprehensive energy and sustainability assessment, focusing first on energy efficiency and other demand-reducing opportunities, then renewable power and other supply-side solutions. We review how customers are currently using energy to identify improvements.
Project Funding Sources
An important step in any energy project is securing financing and other funding sources. Our finance team excels at understanding the market and bringing sound financial partners to the table. Working closely with our customers, we structure plans that minimize risk and meet each customer's unique budgetary needs.
We help public institutions leverage private sector financing and tap government and utility incentives, saving additional taxpayer dollars. As a result, most projects can be funded without up-front capital, so institutions can redirect their resources to other important priorities.
Performance Contracting
For some projects we offer performance contracts, where CES designs and installs energy efficiency upgrades and onsite generation at little or no upfront cost to the customer and guarantees a minimum level of energy savings. The actual cost savings from reduced utility bills are credited against the project costs over time, and at the end of the contract term, the customer retains all of the cost savings. In other words, our projects provide an economic, low-risk way for clients to improve the energy efficiency of their facility while reducing their costs and impact on the environment.
Clean Energy Engineering and Sustainable Design
Depending on the facility, our engineering solutions involve a wide array of clean energy technologies and applications, including lighting systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades, including boilers, chillers and piping; water conservation measures; building shell retrofits; electrical infrastructure; thermal heat storage recovery; on-site renewable power generation (solar photovoltaic, biomass fuels); other distributed power systems (e.g. fuel cells, cogeneration); energy management systems; central plant installations; utility infrastructure and substations; electrical capacity upgrades; and extensive building renovations.
In addition, we offer unparalleled expertise in sustainable design: Dozens of our professionals are accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council in the processes and requirements for achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) green building certification.
Engineering for Energy Reliability and Security
As a project developer for Chevron and the U.S. government, Chevron Energy Solutions understands the importance of reliable, secure energy. For energy reliability projects, we design and build central
utility plants, energy distribution systems and other facilities that ensure highly reliable, secure energy around the clock, including:
- Uninterruptible power supply and standby backup generation
- Central plant design, construction, operation and maintenance
- Thermal energy storage
- Delivery warrantees for power, power quality and thermal energy
- Flexible and low-cost financing options
- Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA)
Equipment Procurement and Construction Management
We procure the equipment and permits required for customer solutions, tapping our vast sourcing experience and Chevron's corporate buying power. As general contractors, we also manage project construction, applying our experience from hundreds of projects completed safely, on time and on budget.
Operations and Maintenance Training and Information Transfer
After a project is constructed, we provide operational and behavioral awareness training for our customers' teams, to optimize and extend the performance of their investment.
Energy Management: Metering, Monitoring and Verification
Some of our contracts include performance guarantees backed by monitoring and verification services.
On these projects, we work with the customer to establish energy usage benchmarks along with recommended strategies for meeting those benchmarks. We then install advanced metering devices and alarms to monitor critical systems and create online reporting systems, enabling our customers to analyze energy usage patterns using a variety of formats and time frames. Our proprietary UtilityVision® system, for example, allows clients to log on to their own web portal remotely, from anywhere at any time.
Educational Program Development
For schools, colleges and universities, we work with staff to leverage learning opportunities associated with solar panels and other renewable technology installations on site.
New Technologies
Through Chevron Technology Ventures, another Chevron unit, CES has access to emerging energy technologies and can apply these technologies in our projects as they become proven and commercialized.
